Hear how to develop Mission and Vision statements that define why your museum exists and its goals for the future, followed by how a formal Scope of Collections statement, based on the Mission and Vision, ensures not only good stewardship of the collections, but success in all areas of programming, exhibitions, and research.

Formally removing objects from your collection can be a challenging process, but one that ultimately makes better use of your money and space resources. Learn about what goes into a clear and usable deaccessioning policy in this session.
Part 2: Beyond “Best Practices”
There are lots of horror stories about deaccessioning that often deter museums from taking action. In this session you’ll have an opportunity to discuss some of these in detail, including the thorny issue of “disposition” of deaccessioned objects, and the need for transparency.
Part 3: Arizona Case Studies
Hear about the experiences that your colleagues at Arizona museums have had deaccessioning collections: their successes and what problems they encountered.
